FACILITIES FORUM 2007
On Thursday 13th September, GymSports New Zealand held a Facilities Forum for clubs across the country to attend. Clubs were invited to come along and find out more about what it takes to purchase, lease or build their own gymsports venue.
Over 50 people took time out to listen to invited speakers and ask questions. The event began with all attendees brainstorming the areas of value that gymsports give to the community plus who was availalbe in their local community to assit with the development of a facility. Howard Johnston, President of North Harbour and Partner in Brookfields Lawyers, spoke about the dynamics required within a club to create a facility. He discussed how clubs needed to think about creating a viable operation and how clubs could make themselves self sustainable. Click HERE for Presentation
Howard also spoke about the options for purchasing, leasing or lease purchasing a building or land for a facilty. Click HERE for presentation
John Hanna from Tristar Gymnastics talked about the development process for the new Auckland Regional Gymsport Facility in Mount Roskill which opened the day before the forum. John spoke as a man with the battle scars of 8 years working through the planning, design & consents, construction and operation of the facility. Click HERE for presentation
Dave Smith, an architect from Congo Design spoke regarding some of the issues around building and suggested that it maybe possible to develop a standard gym layout/facility plan which could be amended to the clubs local environment.
GSNZ CEO, Cath Clark presented the vision for the future of Gymsports in New Zealand. A vision where clubs were the focus and services such as the Facilities Forum could happen to grow the different sporting codes and the participation base. Click HERE for presentation
Don Judkins from the Lion Foundation Gaming Trust spoke about the foundations history, its goals and pressures. He explained that due to reductions in gaming money and a refocus by the Lion Foundation, building venues will no longer be part of its funding plan. Click HERE for presentation
