Event Recap

A lovely crowd of entusiastic competitors, family and friends came to enjoy the 2012 NZ Masters Games Gymsports Championships in Dunedin.  People have said that Dunedin has a great atmosphere and it certainly brings the city alive.  The crowd for the Womens and Mens Artistic Gymnastics Competition was larger than last time and judges got to catch up for the first time this year.  There were a lot of smiles and greetings - and judges wre really looking forward to the event.

There was a strong competition across the Womens Artistic Gymnastics Competition and some amazing athletes showcasing flexibility, choreography and theatrics.  Bribes were jokingly offered  to judges in bags; lollies to entice better marks.  A strong audience participation added to an amazing day!  Waterloo by Tracey McLennan was an absolute crowd-pleaser, with her "Mamma Mia" shorts, extensive flowing purple sleeves and lively routine.  The sole male contestant - Grant Sneddon - had the entire audience in the palm of his hand as we all urged him to complete his bar routine.  He played brilliantly to the crowd, scored an interim score of "10.00" for his superb beam routine, and revelled in the event.  He even shook hands with his imaginary competitors on the podium.

The Aerobics and Rhythmic Gymnastics Competitions attracted another lively crowd.  The programme alternated the different codes, to the enthusiasm of the spectators.  Flexibility, diversity and some moves to motivate the younger people in the crowd, gave a wonderful morning of competition.  Highlights would have to be the group who originally started in Aerobics classes as arm-chair competitors, and became inspired to dazzle us without an armchair in sight.

The event was only made possible due to the significant support of the gymsport community and the amazing volunteers!!  If you see them around, please give them a big THANK YOU!!  Leanne Houston and Sharyn Hurring lead the team with special mention to Pip Hannah for her programme skills.

We look forward to the 2013 Masters Games in Wanganui, with anticipation of 2014, when the event will return to Dunedin.
